Ushio Shinohara: Boxing Paintings
Ronin Gallery is exceptionally pleased to present a collection of Ushio Shinohara’s (b. 1932) celebrated Boxing Paintings, including numerous recent works. In the 1960s and 1970s, New York City emerged as the international center of avant-garde painting and experimental art. It was during this transformative period that Shinohara—the enfant terrible of the Japanese art world—moved to New York and gained widespread recognition for his exhilarating Boxing Paintings. Attaching sponges to a pair of boxing gloves, Shinohara saturates them with paint and punches his way across the canvas, pioneering a distinctive boxing glove painting technique that transforms the physical force and rhythm of his movements into vivid explosions of color. Shinohara’s work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; and Japan Society, New York, among many others.
