Harunobu's Brocade of Spring
Regarded as the "father of color printing," Harunobu (1724-1770) ushered in the era of full-color printing through his delicate, youthful beauties. Whether depicting teahouse waitresses or courtesans of the Yoshiwara, he is best known for his bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). Harunobu's illustrated book The Brocade of Spring (1771) allows the viewer to peek into the lives of courtesans, from evenings on the veranda to rolling snowballs in winter. Ronin Gallery is pleased to present a selection of illustrations from both volumes of The Brocade of Spring.
