Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950) was one of the most prominent Japanese artists of the early 20th century. Inspired by both his native country and his frequent travels abroad, Yoshida's woodblock prints present a distinctly modern vision within the rich history of the landscape genre. Attracted by the calmer moments of nature, he was a master of atmosphere. From the fading evening glow at the Taj Mahal, to the glittering inland sea at dawn, Yoshida captured a quiet, meditative moment in each design. While he is considered a pivotal member of the Shin Hanga, or "New Print," movement, after 1925 Hiroshi Yoshida shed the usual printmaking division of labor and opened his own studio, where he was involved in each stage of the printmaking process.
