Kunimaru (1793 - 1829 )

Born and raised in Edo, Kunimaru Utagawa was an ukiyo-e painter and print artist of the early 19th century. The student of Toyokuni, Kunimaru was talented designer of bijin-ga, or "pictures of beautiful women," and yakusha-e, or "actor prints." Not only a print artist, he was an active illustrator after 1808, as well as a poet. Kunimaru studied haiku with the poet Oryuan and worked under the name Ryubi.
