About the artist

Toru Mabuchi was a modern woodblock print artist and member of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Born in Tokyo, he was the son of the artist and carver Rokutaro Mabuchi. Toru Mabuchi graduated from Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1941, where he studied under the Sosaku Hanga artist Unichi Hiratsuka. Mabuchi’s work concentrates predominantly on still life studies and landscapes. He produced these work through a complex and original printing process. In addition to carving shapes out of the woodblock, Mabuchi attached thin pieces of wood to the block as well. The final images recall the texture of mosaics or pointillist paintings. His work achieved critical recognition when he was chosen to represent Japan at the Tokyo International Print Biennial in 1962.
