About the art

As a twentieth-century master of nature studies, Sozan here showcases his incredible power of observation and his artistic imagination. The bold blue and red color of the two parrots is both realistic and fantastical, while their charming faces and open beaks seem to communicate a sense of personality.

About the artist

Sozan Ito 伊藤 総山 was active from 1909 to 1926 while working for the publisher Watanabe. His style is based on traditional Japanese woodblock printing, while his content centers almost exclusively on nature, such as the delicate study of birds and flowers.
