Ronin Gallery is pleased to present Chikanobu: An Idyllic Life, featuring twenty-two woodblock prints from Chikanobu’s rare 1896 series Azuma (East). From riverside outings and musical performances to quiet moments of reading, writing, and painting, these delightful designs offer an intimate—and idealized—vision of women’s fashions, pastimes, and customs during the Meiji era (1868–1912). Elegantly composed and subtly colored, many of the prints are further enriched with embossing, burnishing, and metallic pigments. Together, they reveal Chikanobu’s mastery of bijin-ga and the exceptional refinement of late nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking.
