About the artist

Hirosada 広貞 is thought to have been the pupil of Utagawa Kunimasu and was one of the most successful printmakers from Osaka during the Edo period (1603 – 1868). Hirosada produced scenes and portraits from Kabuki theater, whose popularity peaked during his career. His works are known for their exceptionally expressive and dramatic style of depicting famous actors his time. Hirosadas's work is included in a number of collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the British Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
