Beato, Felice (1832-1909) View Works

Felice (or Felix Beato) was an Italian-British photographer. An innovator in his field, Beato was one of the first people to take photos in East Asia and is considered to be one of the first war photographers as well. Devoted to photographing in Asia and the Near East, Beato traveled to Japan, India, Athens, Constantinople, the Crimea, and Palestine. Living in Yokohama from 1863 to 1877, Beato made hundreds of ethnographic portraits and genre scenes in Japan. Beato's career was also long affiliated with images of war. He photographed the Opium War in China in 1860 and the Sudanese colonial wars in 1885, as well as the Indian Mutiny and its aftermath.
