Goyo met Tomi Kodaira, his favorite model, through a colleague from Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Goyo was not comfortable with the negotiating required in finding models to pose for artists. He asked his fellow artist, a sculptor, to find him a model with the most beautiful neck and shoulders. The influence of ukiyo-e is clear throughout Goyo’s work, yet you can also see the impact of figure drawing in this print. Goyo completed this print during his lifetime. The blocks were carved by Shichinosuke Takano and printed by Kanzo Somekawa.
