About the artist

Based in Tokyo, Toru Ishii is a contemporary Japanese textile artist working in Yuzen, a resist-dyeing technique that uses a rice-paste resist to establish the composition and separate the different dyes. Born in Shizuoka, Ishii received a Ph.D in Textile Arts from Tokyo University of the Arts. In his work, he is most interested in a subgenre of Yuzen known as Itome Yuzen. Developed in the 18th century by silk producers of Kyoto's Nishijin textile district, this technique allowed rich color and highly complex designs of birds, flowers, figures and landscapes to bloom across kimono and obi of the day. Today, Toru Ishii captures contemporary life in vivid color through this same technique. In his words, “I am creating my work under the theme of simultaneously renovating traditional crafts and refurbishing contemporary art.” In 2023, he was named first runner up in the Ronin Globus OnBeat Artist-in-Residence Program. Toru Ishii's textiles can be found in collections such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and the Morikami Museum, Miami.
