About the artist
Kunitoshi Utagawa was a Meiji-period artist active during the second half of the 19th century. Little is known about his life. A member of the Utagawa school, he studied under Kunisada, Kunitsugu, and Kunisada II. Kunitoshi is best known for capturing a changing Tokyo through his kaika-e, or "enlightenment pictures."
