About the artist

Shuri Teisai was a woodblock print artist and illustrator active around 1810. An early student of Hokuba, Shuri produced some paintings surimono, but is best known for his illustrations for kyoka (crazy verse) poetry anthologies. He was associated with the poetry group known as Lute Circle (biwa-ren), where he composed poems under the name Ryukaen Yamagata.
