About the artist
Shima Tamami was a modern woodblock artist active during the second half of the 20th century. Her works of known for their rich texture. Born in Hirosaki, Aomori, Shima graduated from the Women's College of Fine Arts Tokyo in 1958 before joining the Joryu Hanga Kyokai (Women's Print Association) the following year. The organization exhibited the prints of female artists between 1956 and 1965. In 1962, she was included in Michener's porfolio of modern prints. Most of her prints were produced between 1959 and 1962, but little is known about her later life. She is thought to have moved to the United States in the 1960s.
