Kiyomori (1117-1181) was an ambitious and cruel man who seized power by force and guile and maintained it with a rule of terror. Retribution came in the form of mental illness. One winter night, as Kiyomori stood on his balcony overlooking his peaceful garden, before his eyes the rocks and shrubs became the skulls of his victims. The hallucination persisted, and Kiyomori fell ill with a horrible fever from which he soon died. Another impression can be found in the LACMA.
