Mo So (or Meng Zong in the Chinese tale) lost his father at a young age. He was devoted to his mother. One winter, she fell terribly ill. The doctor told Mo So to make his mother a soup of fresh bamboo shoots. Mo so was devastated at this advice–it was winter so there would be no fresh shoots–but he went to the bamboo forest anyhow. As his desperate tears fell to the ground, fresh shoots suddenly appeared. Overjoyed, he used the shoots to make the soup as the doctor ordered and his mother's health improved.
