Both Kyoshi (or Jiang Shi in the Chinese tale) and his wife were devoted to the care of his aging mother. Though the family lived more than six miles from the river, each day the coupled fetched a bucket of fresh river water and caught fish for the old woman’s delight. Each evening, the couple prepared the fish to the mother’s taste and invited her friends so she would not be lonely. The couple continued to these daily tasks for many years without complaint or hesitation. One day, a spring appeared by the house, supplying an easy supply of fresh water. Each day, two carp would leap from the water, ready to be cooked for dinner.
