About the artist

Shuncho Katsukawa was an ukiyo-e artist active during the late 18th century. A pupil of Shunsho Katsukawa, Shuncho was also greatly influenced by Harunobu Suzuki early in his career and produced a number of very well received prints depicting beautiful women. As his career progressed, he turned his attention to half-portraits of Kabuki actors, which won him great acclaim. Shuncho's style stood out from his contemporaries as his subjects were easily recognizable, both in actor and role, and unlike his contemporaries work, did not rely on printed text notes.
