About the artist

A student of Utamaro, Utamaro II was an ukiyo-e artist known for his bijin-ga, or “pictures of beautiful women.” While studying under Utamaro, Utamaro II used the name Shuncho Koikawa. Following his teacher’s death, Utamaro assumed his second generation name and married Utamaro’s widow. As Utamaro II worked in the style of his late teacher and he signed the works with the same go as his master until 1820, at a glance, it is difficult to distinguish the two artists. Around this 1820, Utamaro began to use the go Tetsugoro Kitagawa. Though his birthdate is unknown, he died around 1831.
