About the artist

Yoshisuke Funasaka is a master of modern Japanese abstract printmaking. Born in Gifu prefecture, Funasaka graduated from Tama University of Art in 1962 before traveling to the United States and Britain to continue his artistic education. His early work is known for its hidden, and sometimes not so hidden, lemon motif. While he explored this motif for roughly two decades, he turned to new ideas in the 1970s. Originally trained as an oil painter, Funasaka is largely a self-taught printmaker.   He uses a variety of printmaking techniques, including woodblock and silkscreen, often in combination. In 1992, he returned to his alma mater as a visiting lecturer on woodblock printing. Funasaka has been awarded numerous prizes at international print fairs and his work can be found in many major museums, including the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art, British Museum and the Smithsonian Institution.
