About the artist

Sadao Murakami worked as a printmaker, painter, and textile designer during the first half of the 20th century. Born in Osaka, Murakami graduated from Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting in 1930. After graduation, he worked in the art department of Takashimaya department store and participated in Sosaku Hanga (Creative Print) exhibitions in the Kansai region, including the 1933 Kyoto Sosaku Hanga Kyokai exhibition. In 1931, Sadao Murakami produced a set of 50 botanical prints and paintings titled Hana no Shirabe with the Kyoto-based publisher Maria Gabo. In 1932, the Unsodo published another series of Murakami's flowers, titled Hyakka Gafu.
