To Fujin’s (or Tang Furen in the Chinese tale) mother-in-law had lost all her teeth. The old woman grew weak, unable to eat even rice. In order to keep her mother-in-law healthy and strong, To Fujin breast-fed the old woman each day. To Fujin’s act allowed her mother-in-law to extend her life for several years. When the mother-in-law was on her deathbed, she praised her daughter-in-law’s filial piety and instructed the whole family to follow To Fujin’s example. These words became the motto of the family.
