Water & Sky: Early 20th Century Watercolors View Works

Ronin Gallery is pleased to present the online exhibition Water and Sky: Early 20th Century Watercolors. In this collection, each artist takes full advantage of the transparency of their medium to create a tangible atmosphere. Imbued with a sense of stillness, these watercolor paintings capture the Japanese landscape awash in the pale pinks, pastel blues, and soft yellow. Watercolor art gained momentum in Japan at the turn of the 20th century as an expressive, colloquial alternative to oil painting. While popular among Yoga, or "Western-style painting" artists, watercolor also attracted artists working in Nihonga, or "Japanese-style painting." In each work in this collection, the artist has signed their name with roman letters.
