About the artist

Totoya Hokkei 北渓 lived in Edo, studying woodblock printmaking under Kano Yosen before becoming one of Katsushika Hokusai’s most accomplished students. Hokkei produced only a small number of single sheet prints during his career, proving to be more prolific in the field of illustrations accompanying satirical poems. His prints are featured in collections such as the Museum of Modern Art New York, the British Museum and Musee Guimet.
