About the artist

Miyagawa, Shuntei was born in Aichi prefecture and lived most of his life in Tokyo. His birth name was Morikici Watanabe. Signing his work Shuntei Gyoshi or Shuntei Kanjin, which literally means “man of leisure,” he studied painting with Watanabe Shoka and Tomioka Eisen. Shuntei was a prolific designer for book and newspaper illustrations as well as woodblock prints. His finest work is of women and children.
