Yoshitora's 47 Ronin
The Ronin Gallery is pleased to present forty-three prints from Yoshitora's series Statues of the Forty-Seven Ronin (1852). The story of the forty-seven Ronin is one of the most popular subjects in Japanese art, literature and drama. Based on true historical events, this narrative of justice and revenge speaks to themes of heroism, loyalty and courage. Though at a glance the prints are compositionally similar, each print distinguishes itself through the individualism of its subject. Whether they be young or old, fierce or calm, Yoshitora portrays each ronin with a distinct character.
