Hiroshige & Toyokuni III: The 53 Stations by Twin Brushes
Pairing theatrical allusion with each station of Japan’s famed Tokaido, the series The 53 Stations by Twin Brushes (1854-1857) brought together two ukiyo-e masters of the mid-19th century. Hiroshige was an unmatched artist of meisho-e, renowned for his ability to capture Japan's natural beauty. Toyokuni III was a star of the actor print genre, bringing the kabuki theater to life with each design. As the Tokaido road winds from Edo to Kyoto in this collaborative series, Hiroshige brings his poetry of landscape to each inset view, while Toyokuni III illustrates each station with vibrant characters. In total, the series numbers 55 designs, 42 of which are included in this exhibition.
