Senso-e: Scenes of War
Senso-e, literally "war pictures," presented imagined scenes of battle during the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895) and Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). These prints fulfilled a pseudo-journalistic function as well as a sensational one, serving as a nationalistic propaganda platform. Ronin Gallery is pleased to present a selection of senso-e triptychs by Meiji-period artists such as Kiyochika, Gekko, and Toshikata. Most of these artists never actually witnessed the war, freeing them to imagine the glory of military victory apart from the harsh reality of war.
