Rakusan Tsuchiya captured the natural world through lush compositions, rich color, and sparkling embellishments. Trained as a painter, he gained renown as a woodblock print artist through his self-published kacho-e, or bird and flower prints. In these natural vignettes, he brought fresh perspective to classic pairings of bird and bloom. Rakusan completed his most popular series, Rakusan Kacho Gafu (Rakusan Flower and Bird Series), between 1929 and 1933. Composed of 100 large-scale, lavishly printed designs, the series sparked such intense demand that his studio continued to print many designs until its closure in 1955. The three resulting editions can be distinguished through their watermarks. This exhibition of Rakusan Tsuchiya's flower and bird prints primarily presents works from the first edition, with a few works from the second edition. Each work is embellished with metallic pigment.
