From the bustling city of Edo to the depths of the gold mines of Sado Island, Hiroshige II (1826-1869) captured the spirit of his time and championed the meisho-e (famous place pictures) genre as the Edo period came to a tumultuous close. Amid lush landscapes, hints of newly opened ports can be seen through glimpses of foreign ships, fashions, and architecture. As the protégé of Hiroshige, historically Hiroshige II has been overshadowed by his teacher in scholarship. Though his pale horizon-bound sails and truncated pine boughs recall the compositions of his mentor, Hiroshige II sets Hiroshige’s lyricism of landscape to a new tune. Featuring a career-spanning selection of Hiroshige II's prints, this exhibition shifts the spotlight from teacher to student.
