Near and Far: Shin Hanga Landscapes
The exhibition Near and Far: Shin Hanga Landscapes invites you to explore the modern landscape print through the work of Hasui Kawase, Hiroshi Yoshida, and Shotei Takahashi. From snow-covered landscapes to blooming gardens, desert nights to mornings at sea, these artists invite their audience along on their travels–whether the destination be just down the road or across the world.
In the early 20th century, artists of the Shin Hanga, or “new print,” movement reasserted the genre of meisho-e, or “famous place pictures,” with fresh eyes and international resonance. Spanning a spectrum of season and mood, weather and time, these modern meisho-e captured and conveyed the beauty of landscapes near and far. As Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) and Shotei Takahashi (1871-1945) shared nostalgic visions of Japan with an increasingly international audience, Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950) extended his travels internationally, expanding the subjects of the meisho-e genre beyond Japanese borders to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the United States. Through growing realism, diverse influence, technical brilliance, and a global audience, Shin Hanga artists envisioned the landscape print for a new era of exploration.
