Kakemono-e: Portraits of Style
Rich in layered patterns and cascading fabrics, kakemono-e or “hanging scroll pictures,” captured the fashions of their day. These works typically present elegant beauties, yet the eye is drawn to the garments rather than the wearer. With special detail paid to the fabric patterns, these works functioned as fashion plates, highlighting the latest trends for a style conscious public. As their name suggests, these vertical diptychs echoed the format of a hanging scroll. Today, these prints are rare and often bear signs of wear due to their use. This collection includes works from artists such as Eisen, Eizan, Kuniyoshi, and Kunisada.
