Imagining Japan: Meiji-period Photography
Ronin Gallery is pleased to present a selection of early photographs of Japan. At the beginning of the Meiji period (1868-1912), photography took off as a commercial industry in Japan. As the government eased travel restrictions on foreigners in the late 1800s, tourists began to flock to the country. Photographs functioned as popular, portable souvenirs. While some captured famous places or views, others presented staged studio imagery that was often more true to travelers' ideas about Japanese culture than to the nation transforming and modernizing before their eyes. All photographs in the collection are hand-colored albumen prints.
