Hokusai's Tokaido
The Ronin Gallery invites you to journey the old Tokaido with a selection of works from Hokusai’s 1804 series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido (Tokaido Goju-san Tsugi). The main artery of Edo-period Japan, the Tokaido Road, connected Edo, the seat of the Shogun, and Kyoto, the Imperial capital. Hokusai was not known to have traveled the Tokaido himself at the time of printing but was fascinated by the Tokaido and revisited the subject throughout his career. While designed in 1804, the series was continually printed throughout Hokusai’s lifetime–a testament to its popularity. All of the works in this series are in a small (koban) format and provide a fantastic opportunity to acquire an original Hokusai print at an affordable price.
