In the second rotation of Another Side of Genius, Ronin Gallery is pleased to feature One Hundred Views of Mt. Fuji. In this three-volume masterpiece of illustration, published in multiple editions between c.1834-1875 and beyond, Hokusai’s designs of this sacred mountain exemplify his genius as a draftsman, his rich imagination, and his exploratory spirit. While the iconic series Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji (c. 1830- 1833) situates the mountain in the landscape of Japan, One Hundred Views of Mt. Fuji explores the mountain through Hokusai’s imagination. From a coiling dragon beneath the summit, to the aftermath of a volcanic eruption, each composition explores Mt. Fuji through a fresh lens. Though these designs were published as a set of three bound ehon (illustrated books), over time individual designs have become separated from their volumes. This exhibition includes all 102 designs from across the three volumes sold individually.
