The Tokaido was the coastal road that connected the Imperial capital of Kyoto with the Shogun's capital in Edo. In the 19th century, thousands traveled along this route each year, indulging their zeal for travel and experiencing the unique character of each rest stop along the way. Through the Hoeido Tokaido, Hiroshige immortalized the beauty and adventure of travel along this famed road.
