Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety by Chikanobu
This Mother's Day, Ronin Gallery celebrates all mothers with Chikanobu's interpretation of the classic Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety. Dating to Yuan dynasty China, these twenty-four tales of devoted children and their honored parents inspired artists and audiences over the centuries. Chikanobu brings together these familiar tales with scenes of 19th century Japanese life in his vivid woodblock print series. As the original stories unfold at the top of the image, Chikanobu offers modern comparisons rich in wit in the design below. For each work, the title includes both the Japanese name and the Chinese name of each character.
