About the artist

Yasuhide Kobashi was a 20th century woodblock print artist, sculptor, stage designer, and painter. Born in Kojima, Okayama Prefecture, Kobashi graduated from Kyoto College of Crafts and textiles in 1955 before moving to New York City in 1959. In Japan, had studied woodblock printmaking under artist Unichi Hiratsuka, working in the self-cut, self-printed spirit of the Sosaku Hanga movement. He found an eager patron in Nelson Rockefeller following the move to New York. Today, Kobashi’s work can be found in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art NY, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
