Rinsai (fl.1869 - 1890 )
Rinsai Utsushi’s imaginative bird and flower prints are dynamic, unusual in their combinations of traditional landscapes and decorative flourishes. Working in Tokyo between 1869 and 1890, Rinsai dedicated his woodblock designs to the natural world. His kacho-e, or bird-and-flower pictures, were largely released as sets and volumes, as opposed to single sheet prints. Newly Selected Nature Studies (1880) is Rinsai’s largest and best known collection of kacho-e.
