About the artist

Both a writer and print artist, little is known about Sadayoshi. He belonged to the Osaka sect of the Utagawa school, which became visible around 1835. The rise of Edo-style imagery is likely due to the influx of Edo actors in Osaka between 1829 and 1831. As artists would often follow large kabuki touring companies to their various destinations, it is is probable that some of these artists belonged to the Utagawa school. Osaka’s circle of Edo-oriented artists was largely tied with Tenki publishing house.
