Rinsai (fl. 1869-1890) View Works

Utsushi Rinsai’s imaginative and creative bird and flower prints are dynamic, unusual combinations of traditional landscapes reinvigorated with the addition of particular decorative Western techniques. Working in Tokyo between 1869 and 1890, Rinsai dedicated his woodblock designs to the natural world. His kacho-e, or bird-and-flower pictures, were largely released in sets and volumes, as opposed to individually. Released in 1880, Newly Selected Nature Studies, is Rinsai’s largest and best known collection of kacho-e.
