About the artist

Born and raised in Edo, Kunimaru Utagawa was an ukiyo-e painter and print artist during the Edo period. The student of Toyokuni, Kunimaru was talented designer of bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women, and yakusha-e, or actor prints. Not only a print artist, he was an active illustrator after 1808, as well as a poet. Under the name “Ryubi,” Kunimaru studied haiku with the poet Oryuan.
