Fusatane (fl.1854 - 1889 )
Fusatane Utagawa worked as a painter and ukiyo-e woodblock print artist active during the second half of the 19th century. He was the student of Sadafusa. Active during the tumultuous transition from the Edo period to the Meiji period, Fusatane’s work spans familiar genres, such as bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) and landscapes, to contemporary reflections, such as kaika-e (images of Japan’s modernization) and images of the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion. Like many woodblock print artists of his era, Fusatane also worked as an illustrator for newspapers and novels.
