About the artist
Gyojin Murakami was 20th-century painter and print artist. Early in professional career, Murakami pursued painting on the side, exhibiting both nihonga and oil painting with the Shin Bijitsu Kyokai. He served during World War II in Burma. Following his return to Japan, he turned to the woodblock print medium, adopting the name “gyojin” and producing prints in the spirit of the sosaku hanga, or “creative print,” movement.
