About the artist
Toyonobu Ishikawa was an 18th ukiyo-e artist. He was a pupil of Shigenaga and was greatly influenced by the work of Masanobu. Initially, Toyonobu produced many urushi-e (lacquer prints). As his career developed, he emerged as one of the leading figures in early color printing. He was particularly acclaimed for his benizuri-e, or "rose prints." Much of his work was centered on Kabuki actors.
