About the artist
Shinichi Takahashi was a modern printmaker of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Born on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, Takahashi worked on the island as an art teacher and participated in a variety of international print exhibitions, including the 1960 exhibition of Sosaku Hanga at the Art Institute of Chicago. He was known both for his expressive prints and well as his promotion of printmaking on Sado Island. Through his own printmaking society Takahashi encouraged locals to try their hand at woodblock printmaking.
