About the artist
Yoshio Kanamori was a Japanese woodblock print artist active in the second half of the 20th century. Born in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, Kanamori attended the Tokyo School of Fine Arts for a time before before studying with a master of the sosaku hanga, or “creative print,” movement, Shiko Munakata. In the spring of 1945, Munakata came to Toyama to avoid the bombing of Tokyo. Kanamori joined his teacher as a co-founder of the Nihon Hanga-in (Japanese Print Institute) in 1952. In 1958, an exhibition of the two artists toured the US. Today, Kanamori's prints can be found in institutions such as the British Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Modern Art New York.
