About the artist
Born in Edo, Kuniteru Utagawa studied under both Toyokuni I and Kunisada. He worked in the style of the Utagawa school. Kuniteru produced book illustrations as well as single-sheet prints. His subjects traversed popular genres, from actors and warriors to beauties and kaika-e, “enlightenment pictures.” Kaika-e depicted the changing customs, clothing, and architecture of a Japan modernizing along a Western model. Like many artists, Kuniteru used a variety of go, or “artist names,” over the course of his career. His known go include Kunitsuna II and Sadashige.
